BBC iPlayer – Pompeii: The New Dig

Just when you thought you knew all there was to know about Pompeii, along comes another dig revealing another reason why you need to revisit the ancient city destroyed in AD 79, when Mount Vesuvius exploded and poured molten lava over the inhabitants.

This documentary was first shown on UK TV last week and is now on BBC iPlayer, so if you missed it, it is now time to catch up. The episode deals with the delicate issues of excavating further bodies found in a new area of the site, which appears to have been a thriving commercial centre where wealthy people also lived and ran businesses.

Cameras get right down to the nitty gritty of recovering bodies from the debris of the volcano, so be aware that some scenes may be upsetting. But this is the nearest you are going to be to getting deep down and dirty in the rubble of Pompeii and seeing an excavation at close hand.

There are some wonderful new frescoes revealed – and a stunning discovery on one: evidence that the residents of Pompeii ate pizza! This is a finding that momentarily causes more excitement among the archeological team than anything else, it seems! It is a simple link to the past that brings the victims of Pompeii close to our own daily lives today.

You can watch the Pompeii: The New Dig online at BBC iPlayer.

Buon viaggio!
