As if The Forum in Rome has not enough on offer to keep us happy, the Parco archeologico del Colosseo has revealed that archaeologists have unearthed what appears to be a sculpture of the head of Dionysus near the Forum.
The bust was found as part of an ancient wall and the news was reported on the Parco archeologico del Colosseo’s Instagram feed.
The head is made of white marble – Dionysus is known as Bacchus in Greek culture, and is know as god of drunkenness, wine, fertility, religious ecstasy and debauchery. The artist Caravaggio frequently portrayed himself as Bacchus.
The head will be cleaned and displayed, say archaeologists.
